About the Games

CARD PLAYING: All participants pay a nominal fee to play or may show their activity card. Breaks are taken midway for refreshments. Members need to check the monthly calendar to confirm time and location.

7’s FROM HELL: Sevens from Hell is a card game for four or six players. Its style of play is most similar to Canasta or Hand and Foot. A full game consists of four rounds, each running thirty minutes to an hour. The origins of the game are not known. Tuesdays in the Card Room 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

CRIBBAGE: The cribbage group meets every Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 – 3:30 pm in the Card Room. There are usually 12 to 20 players, with plenty of room for new participants.

HAND AND FOOT: The objective is to get rid of all the cards from your ‘Hand’, and then ‘Foot’ by melding them. A Meld is a set of 3 – 7 cards of the same rank, that are placed face-up. It cannot have less than three cards or more than seven cards. A Meld belongs to the team, and not any individual player. After a Meld of three or more cards starts, more cards can be added to it until there are seven cards in the pile. It then becomes a ‘Closed Pile’ or ‘Book’. Deuces and Jokers can be used in melds along with at least four natural cards, but not the red and black Threes. Meets every Monday afternoon at 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm in the Card Room.

HEARTS: At the end of each hand, players count the number of hearts they have taken as well as the queen of spades, if applicable. Hearts count as one point each and the queen counts 13 points. The aggregate total of all scores for each hand must be a multiple of 26. The game is usually played to 100 points. Our Hearts group meets up Fridays in the Library Lounge from 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm.

MAHJONG: This is a game of skill coupled with wit and good fortune. It originated in China, and dates so far back into ancient times, that it is said even Confucius enjoyed a variation of this intriguing game. It is played with tiles, 152 plus four as jokers, and they are arranged in a wall formation. A player draws a hand from the wall and the play begins. It is just draw and discard, with a book as a guide to the hands that will win you a mahjong. It is a wonderful game, we play every Tuesday (Mahjon-Card) and Wednesday (Mahjon-Book) 9 am – 12 pm in the Card Room, and if you wish to learn, we will teach you. You do not need a partner. We can play mahjong with three, four or more players. We would be delighted to have you join us.

Omaha Hi-Lo: 5 Card Omaha Hi/Lo is played with an 8 or better qualifier. To win the low pot, a low hand must be comprised of five cards all ranked eight or less. Low hands work precisely the same way as they do in Omaha Hi/Lo. If no players have a qualifying low hand, the whole pot will go to the high hand. This game is played in the Dining Room on Wednesday Afternoon 3:15 pm – 5:00 pm.

PINOCHLE: The goal is to win tricks, so as to score the value of cards taken in on tricks and to meld certain combinations of cards having values in points. The Pinochle group meets on Monday’s at 1:00 pm – 4pm, in the library lounge. The play is with a single deck.

Texas Hold’em: When playing Texas Holdem poker, every player is dealt two cards face down – these are called your ‘hole cards’. Then there is a round of betting where you can Check, Bet or Fold. The winner is the person with the best hand. Join our card players in this classic game Wednesday afternoons 12:30 pm – 3:00 pm in the Dining Room.
